That’s where I come in. You see, not so long ago, I used to be where you are right now. I had started my training business full of excitement and hope. I relished the idea of being my own boss, setting my own hours and writing my own pay cheques.

After the honeymoon period passed by, reality set in and I bumped back to earth with a crash. Suddenly I realised what a challenge I had ahead of me. You see, for anything to be done in my business, I had to do it myself. So I was involved in everything. Identifying new opportunities, meeting clients, writing proposals, buying and creating advertising, delivering the ‘end product’ to clients….you get the picture.

Far from enjoying freedom and independence of ‘going it alone’, I was confronted by loneliness, stress and the harsh reality that if anything was going to happen in my business, it had to be done by me.

Do you ever feel that there just aren’t enough hours in the day? Are you frustrated because you can see opportunities that you don’t have time to implement? That’s certainly how I felt.

My ‘dream’ of owning my own business had actually turned into a nightmare. Instead of feeling that I was running my own business, I felt like the business was running ME.

Around this time I read a book called ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ by Robert Kiyosaki. He says the true test of whether you actually own a business is whether you can leave it for a year or more and return to find it running more profitably than when you left it. If that’s not the case, then you don’t have a business, you have a job.

When I first heard this, I realised that I didn’t have a business at all, I had a JOB! And it wasn’t even a good job. When I added up ALL the hours I was working, and took into account ALL the costs of running my business I was making less per hour than they pay at McDonalds! And most jobs come with perks, security, set working hours and conditions and regular pay. But that certainly wasn’t true of my business. I was working weekends to meet deadlines. Trying to balance prospecting and selling to clients with delivering paid work. My social life was suffering, and I felt I was caught on this huge hamster wheel with no way out.

The trouble was, as long as I was selling my time, I was basically ‘manual labour’, and because there was so much of my personal time invested in every single sale there was a limit to how many new clients I could bring in.

I was caught in the ‘time trap’ and there was no obvious way out.

You see, what I needed, more than anything at that moment in time was practical help. At a point when I was so frazzled I could barely think clearly, I needed someone capable, confident and experienced to step in and give me clear step-by-step instructions on how to get from where I was to where I wanted to be, which was running a successful, thriving business that helped a lot of people without me having to sacrifice my life, health or sanity to get there.

I started looking for help in the shape of books and courses, but the trouble was, none of it seemed applicable to MY business.

I knew I needed to do something different, but how?

They say when the student is ready the teacher appears, and that was certainly true for me. By ‘co-incidence’ I came across a woman called Dottie Walters and meeting her would turn out to be one of the biggest turning points in my life….

Dottie invited me to a special weekend workshop she was running at her home. At this time I was living in Oxford, England, so getting on a plane to fly to California was no small thing, but I knew intuitively that she could help me. I believe that when you choose a business mentor it’s important that you choose someone who has already accomplished what you want to, in the way that you want to and also is a role model who inspires you. (Dottie passed away on 14th February last year - a very fitting date for a woman whose heart was so big.)

After attending Dottie’s workshop, I returned home with a 3-step plan that would help get me from where I was - time-pressed, stressed, and juggling a whole lot of priorities into earning money from my expertise, not just my time.

These were the 3 steps I followed:

1. Stop undervaluing what you have to offer – somewhere in the world there is a market niche who badly needs what you already know and they are willing to pay ‘Big Bucks’ for it.

2. ‘Productise’ your service business and package your expertise into products and programmes that can be sold ‘off the shelf’ and aren’t dependent upon your time to deliver. That means instead of ‘do the work, get paid’, you ‘do the work and get paid, paid, paid, paid, paid, paid, paid….’

3. Remove the ‘manual labour’ from your sales and marketing, so you don’t have to be personally involved in every single sale. Replace time-consuming sales and marketing activities with automated sales processes such as direct mail, the internet and email marketing, and leverage your sales efforts by replacing the old time consuming ‘one-to-one’ methods like cold-calling, networking and lengthy proposal writing with ‘one-to-many’ techniques that help you reach MORE people in LESS time.

Implement any one of these steps and your income will grow. But when you put all three together…

Fast forward to today and I now have my own online money machine that generates me a consistent income averaging over £24k a month, and sometimes as much as over £40k in a single month!

And what makes this all the more remarkable is that I do this working part-time from my home with no employees, no business meetings, no proposals, no travelling to client premises. It’s all on my own terms. I set my own hours, and I take time off as and when I choose to. I work with a limited number of hand-picked clients, mostly by phone or email, and when we DO meet in person, they travel to me.

What’s most important to me is that I am able to fit my working hours around caring for my two sons (both under 2!). A few years ago, I could not have conceived (if you’ll pardon the pun) of having a family the way I was earning my living back then.

These days the bulk of my income comes from products and coaching programmes, rather than selling my time so there is no ceiling on my income any more.

As my business has grown I have needed to hire help to assist with different aspects of my business, but I don’t have staff. I have several ‘virtual assistants’ dotted around the world ready to leap into action as and when I need them.

All in all, it’s like a dream come true.
